Kansas City Chiefs: Elijah Moore provides WR2 potential

The Kansas City Chiefs find their WR2 in the latest mock draft from NBC Sports. 

Having Tyreek Hill as their top weapon is fun, but the Kansas City Chiefs need to find a viable WR2 option. As we saw in the Super Bowl, it is possible to properly cover both Hill and Travis Kelce and with those two both covered, Patrick Mahomes had a tough time getting the ball to the other playmakers because they simply weren’t up for the task.

The 2021 NFL Draft provides the Chiefs an opportunity to find their next WR2 and in NBC Sports’ latest mock draft, KC took Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore with their first-round draft choice. Dalton Johnson and Josh Schrook worked together to compile this draft and Schrook was the one who made the selection for Kansas City and had this to say,

"The Chiefs should probably address their secondary or offensive line, but that’s no fun.Moore is a home-run threat every time he touches the ball and would thrive in Kansas City’s wide-open offense, giving Patrick Mahomes yet another dynamic weapon. –JS"

While I agree that picking an offensive lineman is “no fun”, it’s probably the route we’re going to see the Chiefs go in considering they just released their two starting tackles from the past several years. Protecting Mahomes is a bigger deal than giving him another weapon right now, plus this draft is very deep in receivers.

Going back to the pick itself, however, Moore would be a great choice to add to the Chiefs’ arsenal of weapons. He had an explosive 2020 season with Ole Miss, hauling in 86 receptions for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 850 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore in 2019.

Elijah Moore would undoubtedly give the Kansas City Chiefs the WR2 they’ve been searching for.

The problem is that drafting a wide receiver in the first round isn’t the way to go, not with all of the holes on the offensive line and on the defensive side of the ball. The Chiefs definitely should draft a wide receiver, but they could wait until Day 3 to do so.

Imagining Moore on this offense is a fun thought though. He’d replace Sammy Watkins as the team’s WR2 and hopefully, he’d be more effective than Watkins was. The Chiefs also still have Mecole Hardman, who could be the WR2 until Moore passes him on the depth chart.
