Nebraska football doesn’t want to play Oklahoma anymore and it’s not a good look for the Cornhuskers.

Sept. 18 was supposed to mark the 50th anniversary of the “Game of the Century” between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Oklahoma Sooners. Instead, Nebraska has decided that it doesn’t want to take part in that game and is trying to, as Brett McMurphy stated, “get out of playing Oklahoma”.

This is a new low for the Nebraska football program and the Cornhuskers deserve every bit of flack thrown their way during this time.

Let’s just tell it how it is.

Nebraska doesn’t want to play Oklahoma in September because they know they’re going to get pounded by the Sooners. Oklahoma is a College Football Playoff-caliber team each and every season and can score at any moment.

Meanwhile, Nebraska hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 when Mike Riley was their head coach. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Huskers when Scott Frost was hired as their next coach in 2017, but nothing has come of it. Every year, it’s the same excuses and fans should be embarrassed by the product that’s been put on the field.

Nebraska football has hit an all-time low.

There were definitely some positives surrounding Nebraska, however, like the fact that their offense had shown some life late in the season or that their defense slowly looked to be rounding the corner. This act of wanting to not play Oklahoma though is beyond embarrassing.

Oklahoma is much better at football and we all know that. They’re going to destroy Nebraska (and this announcement is going to make this game even worse now for the Huskers), but it’s to celebrate the anniversary of an iconic game. The fact that the Cornhuskers want out of it just to avoid getting the crap kicked out of them is something the program should be ashamed of.

This is also a terrible message to send to the players on the team. The program is essentially saying it doesn’t believe in its players and that’s the exact opposite of the message that should be sent to those who committed to Nebraska.

Nebraska football has been on a downward spiral for quite some time now, but this story tops them all. How can fans continue to defend Frost, Bill Moos, and the rest of the football program after this news has gotten out? Nebraska is trying to avoid playing good teams because it knows it’s not where it should be and that’s on Frost and the rest of the athletic department.

Hey, at least Nebraska has volleyball, right? They should really start putting all of their money into the volleyball team at this point because the football team has hit an all-time low.
