Would Azeez Ojulari be a good fit for the KC Chiefs at pick No. 31 in the 2021 NFL Draft?

Despite the big names on defense, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ pass rush was not all it was cracked up to be in 2020. We saw this in the Super Bowl, as the lack of pressure on Tom Brady allowed him to get the ball out quickly and the Bucs never looked back.

While a lot of mock drafts have had the Chiefs selecting an offensive lineman in the first round, Cynthia Frelund of NFL.com went a different route in her recent mock draft. She linked the Chiefs to Azeez Ojulari, an EDGE rusher from Georgia.

"I think Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would be very pleased with this one. Ojulari is fast. His burst (to 2 yards past the line of scrimmage) was the fastest in the FBS last season. He’s versatile in alignment use, which means Spags can be creative and not have to rely on coverage as much as he did in 2020."

This would be an intriguing selection. Ojulari finished the 2020 season with 31 total tackles (12.5 for loss) and 9.5 sacks through 10 games. He also forced four fumbles and had two defended passes. Clearly, the production is there with Ojulari.

The KC Chiefs need pass rushers if they want to stay on top.

With both Chris Jones and Frank Clark on defense, the Chiefs’ pass rush should be much better than it actually is. Unfortunately, with so much money tied up in those two guys, it’s doubtful the Chiefs will have much money to bring in another premier pass rusher via free agency. That’s where the draft comes into play.

Adding pass rushers is key for the Chiefs. If defenses don’t put pressure on the quarterback, it’s going to be a long afternoon/evening and that’s exactly what we saw in the Super Bowl. Most of the time, Patrick Mahomes can cover it up by leading the team to a comeback, but — again, as we saw in the Super Bowl — that’s not always going to happen.

Frelund mentions in the blurb above how fast Ojulari is and the fact that he’s versatile. He’s the kind of player Steve Spagnuolo covets and he’d be thrilled to have the Bulldog pass rusher as a part of his arsenal for 2021 and beyond.
