The KC Chiefs didn’t just lose Super Bowl LV, they got smacked around in embarrassing fashion and the fan base was not expecting that.

In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl LV, sports talk radio in Kansas City along with social media was filled with cocky fans who felt confident that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to run it back and win their second straight Super Bowl. People weren’t giving Tampa Bay any shot in hell at beating the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV and those same people were probably pretty surprised with the results of the game.

Look, I get it. Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL and whenever he’s healthy and under center, the Chiefs are never out of a game. That’s given Chiefs fans a lot of confidence in recent years.

It doesn’t help that last year’s playoffs involved the Chiefs trailing by double digit points in all three of their games and going on to win all three. Coming back in historic fashion like that on three separate occasions gave this fan base a reason to be arrogant and we saw that come out these past few weeks.

KC Chiefs fans felt confident their team would win and the result has brought them back down to Earth.

We were all on cloud nine when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl last year. I never thought I’d see them win a Super Bowl in my life so finally witnessing it was awesome. The nostalgia of that paired with how good Mahomes and Reid have been together made some Chiefs fans think that this team couldn’t lose.

Well, they lost.

Now, instead of simply accepting the defeat and giving the Buccaneers credit for shutting down the Chiefs typically explosive offense, fans are complaining about the officiating. The calls at the end of the half were bad, yes, but the Chiefs had opportunities to make something happen and they didn’t capitalize. They lost 31-9, so it’s not like those calls clinched the game for Tampa Bay.

I’ll admit I was upset over some of those calls too, but the Chiefs only scored nine points. They didn’t even score a touchdown. It’s hard to win a game if you don’t find the end zone.

This loss hurts, but hopefully it shows Chiefs fans that winning isn’t guaranteed. Lessons can be learned from losing and hopefully both the team and the fans learned from this butt kicking.

There’s always next year.
