Patrick Mahomes has given Chiefs fans a really good reason to be full of themselves.

Turn on any local Kansas City sports talk station and there isn’t any doubt that the Chiefs will win Super Bowl LV and be back-to-back Super Bowl champions. The reason fans have this much confidence is because of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

This is a far cry from how Chiefs fans used to feel ahead of big games. Speaking from experience, prior to beating the Colts in the AFC Divisional Round in Mahomes’ first year as a starter, I was convinced this organization would never win a Super Bowl. I really thought they were cursed because they wouldn’t just lose playoff games, they’d lose them in very bizarre ways.

When Mahomes and the Chiefs knocked off the Colts in that season’s Divisional Round, it was evident that there wasn’t a curse. They were able to win home playoff games and make it to AFC Championship Games. In fact, since then, they haven’t missed an AFC title game. That’s because of Mahomes.

The proof is in the pudding for why Chiefs fans have a right to be arrogant.

While I do believe this game isn’t going to be a landslide victory for KC, what Mahomes has done with the Chiefs is hard to ignore. He’s lost just one game since November 2019 and even when he and his offense got behind by several touchdowns in last season’s playoffs, they still came back and won. Mahomes is never out of it.

This is a really good feeling for Chiefs fans because, let’s be honest, prior to him coming to KC, this organization was a joke. They hadn’t won a home playoff game since Joe Montana was the quarterback of the Chiefs and they hadn’t made it to a Super Bowl in nearly five decades (they broke that record at the 50-year mark, in fact).

The Chiefs didn’t draft a quarterback in the first round from 1983 until they moved up to take Mahomes in 2017, so this franchise was always relying on castoffs to lead the charge. Once they finally identified their guy and made him a Chief, the rest was history.

Chiefs fans had to deal with being let down year after year after year and now that they’ve experienced winning at the highest level, obviously, they’re going to soak it up. It’s been a fun journey and I, for one, hope it doesn’t slow down any time soon.
