Chiefs news consists of the Falcons planning to speak with Eric Bieniemy.

It seemed bizarre when Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy wasn’t hired for a head coaching job this time last year. Now it seems to be a foregone conclusion that he’ll be coaching an NFL team for the 2021 season, as he should be.

The first team to request to interview Bieniemy is none other than the Atlanta Falcons. The announcement that the Falcons organization was interested came on Sunday evening, hours after the Falcons’ 2020 season came to a close.

The Falcons are also reportedly interested in 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, which is a very different option than that of Bieniemy. Atlanta fired Dan Quinn, a former defensive coordinator for the Seahawks, earlier this season so it’d make more sense for them to go in a different direction as far as head coaches go.

The Falcons made it to the Super Bowl in the 2016 season and we all know what happened there (28-3…). Ever since Kyle Shanahan took the 49ers’ head coaching job, the Falcons haven’t been the same. They’re not in a great position moving forward either, as they’re still tied to Matt Ryan and Julio Jones for the time being. Jones is still great, but it’s hard for the team to do much financially due to both his and Ryan’s contract.

Bieniemy needs to go to a team where there’s a quarterback in place and that’s not Atlanta. Sure, Ryan is there for at least another year, but he’s not the future of that organization like Trevor Lawrence will be in Jacksonville or like Justin Herbert will be in Los Angeles. Those are two of the best landing spots for Bieniemy.

Still, Bieniemy should definitely go to every interview he’s offered. We all thought for sure he’d be landing a head coaching job this time last year and while fans were glad he was returning, it didn’t seem right that he was passed on by so many teams. This year should be different for Eric Bieniemy.
