Who shined the brightest in the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the Saints?

While the game once again came down to the nitty-gritty, the Kansas City Chiefs managed to secure a 32-29 victory over the New Orleans Saints. It was an interesting game because the Chiefs pulled away with double-digit leads on a few different occasions, but the Saints came roaring back each time.

Despite the threat to come back and steal the win, the Chiefs held on and these five players are a big reason as to why the champs moved to 13-1 on the season.

Star performances from the Kansas City Chiefs – No. 5: Sammy Watkins

Chiefs fans knew that the Saints were going to do their best to take away the likes of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce and that meant other Chiefs receivers were going to have to step up. Sammy Watkins‘ numbers might not be eye-popping (four catches for 60 yards), but he was second in receiving yards for the Chiefs on Sunday.

Not only that, but it was WHEN Watkins came up with receptions that landed him on this list. Two of his four catches were for first downs on crucial third-down attempts while another reception went for a first down as well (it was only second down on that grab). When the Chiefs needed a key first down, Mahomes was looking Watkins’ way and we saw why in this game.

Star performances from the Kansas City Chiefs – No. 4: Le’Veon Bell

The signing of Le’Veon Bell could end up being the biggest move this team made during the season, as Clyde Edwards-Helaire exited the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent leg injury. Bell played well against the Saints and it looked like he was finally starting to find his groove with this offense.

Bell finished the game with 15 rushes for 62 yards and a touchdown while also grabbing one catch for 14 yards. He might not have made the impact we were expecting him to up until now, but Bell is definitely someone who is going to help the Chiefs down the stretch. He showed what he could do in this game and the offense will need to see that from him in the final few games of the season, especially if CEH misses time.

Star performances from the Kansas City Chiefs – No. 3: Travis Kelce

Typically Travis Kelce ends up pretty high on these lists, but I put him at No. 3 this week because the Saints did a pretty good job at containing him. You know Kelce is the best in the biz when his stat line of eight catches for 68 yards and a touchdown is considered as a “weak” game.

Kelce continuously got open and made plays when Mahomes needed him to and that’s why he’s the best at the tight end position. He didn’t get the record for most receiving yards by a tight end, but he has two more games to do so and only needs 60 some more yards to get to that mark.

Star performances from the Kansas City Chiefs – No. 2: Clyde Edwards-Helaire

I mentioned earlier how Edwards-Helaire exited the game with an injury and it came after an impressive performance from the first-round rookie. CEH finished the game with 14 carries for 79 yards and hauled in one catch for four yards, giving him 83 total yards.

The Saints’ defense definitely encouraged the Chiefs to run the ball because they didn’t want Mahomes to beat them and the Chiefs took them up on that. Edwards-Helaire had his best game since Week 11 when he rushed for 69 yards against the Raiders.

It’ll be unfortunate if Edwards-Helaire is unable to play for the duration of the season, especially after this performance. He played well against a good defense and the Chiefs will definitely miss him if he can’t return to the field for the 2020 season.

Star performances from the Kansas City Chiefs – No. 1: L’Jarius Sneed

Well, to this point, it’s only been offensive players on my list, but L’Jarius Sneed gets the No. 1 spot after arguably his best game as a professional cornerback. Sneed started the game off with an interception off of Drew Brees, then sacked him a few possessions later, and also had several key pass breakups.

Simply put — Sneed was everywhere against the Saints and he’s looking more and more like a steal from the 2020 NFL Draft. Maybe it was the fact that he was returning to Louisiana where he played his college ball or maybe Sneed really is the cornerback the Chiefs have been trying to find for quite some time now.

Whatever the reason was for his dominant performance, hopefully, we see it for the rest of the 2020 season.
