Let’s play what-if. What if the Saints had managed to grab [Patrick] Mahomes back in the [2017] NFL Draft? Where do you think the Saints, Sean Payton, and Drew Brees would all be? And do you think Mahomes would be as good as he is in reality?

Nathan: “I’m not sure Mahomes would’ve even gotten in quite yet. The Saints have been dedicated to Brees, so he really would’ve had to show something. Mahomes is obviously the face of the league, and he’s been absolutely incredible. I would’ve hoped that Payton saw his potential and given him the chance to make something happen in New Orleans. It continually feels like the Saints should trade up for a quarterback, and it would’ve completely changed the franchise.”

Last QB question: who’s the starting quarterback for the Saints in 2021?

Nathan: “Taysom Hill. I don’t really want to believe it, but he’s shown enough. It’d be strange if it’s Jameis Winston as it’d feel like some odd reason that Payton isn’t playing him now. I doubt a rookie starts from Day 1, but that’s also a distant possibility.”
