The KC Chiefs are going to need a new offensive coordinator this offseason. Could they bring back one of their former offensive coordinators?
It was crazy that Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was passed on for a head coaching job last season after his squad won the Super Bowl, but teams won’t make that same mistake again this upcoming offseason. Bieniemy is going to land somewhere and the Chiefs will have to find a replacement for him.
The man who held the job before Bieniemy was promoted was Matt Nagy, who is currently the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Nagy spent his entire NFL coaching career under the tutelage of Andy Reid, serving as a coaching intern, coach’s assistant, and offensive quality control coach during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
When Reid headed to Kansas City, he took Nagy with him and gave him the role of quarterbacks coach, which he held for three seasons. When Doug Pederson took the Eagles job, Nagy was promoted to offensive coordinator and flourished in the role. He held the job for just two seasons before the Bears hired him to be their next head coach.
After a good debut season in 2018 in which his Bears won the NFC North and Nagy won Coach of the Year honors, Chicago has floundered the past two seasons. Nagy could very well be on his way out after this season as a result of the Bears’ struggles. Chicago started the season 5-1, including knocking off the Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. Their defense was shining during this time, but they’ve since lost six straight games and sit at 5-7 with their playoff hopes all but lost.
If Matt Nagy is relieved of his duties, should the KC Chiefs bring him back in the fold?
The Chiefs were highly successful offensively when Nagy was the offensive coordinator. Andy Reid even let Nagy call the plays on occasion and that was when fans saw the best of Alex Smith, who was the quarterback during that time. If he was able to get that type of production out of Smith, just imagine what he could do with Patrick Mahomes.
Nagy hasn’t had that kind of talent to work with during his time in Chicago. He’s tried to make the Mitchell Trubisky experiment work, but that’s been a disaster. While the head coach deservingly should take the heat for when things go run, the Bears don’t have good quarterbacks. That wouldn’t be the case in Kansas City.
Some fans probably wouldn’t like Nagy returning, as it’d take opportunities away from Mike Kafka or some of the other mainstays in the Chiefs coaching staff. This is definitely something to consider, but given Nagy’s experience and the fact that Kafka too has received some buzz on the head coaching market, inviting him back to work with the coach who made his career isn’t a bad idea.
Of course, this all hinges on if Nagy is indeed fired or not. The Bears are likely going to miss out on the playoffs for the second straight season and with how badly the team has sputtered out of control after a commanding start, Nagy could be on his way out.
It’s only his third season, but considering the Bears have regressed majorly in his three years at the helm, Chicago might not give Matt Nagy a fourth season to try and right the ship.
