Is anyone surprised to see Patrick Mahomes as the No. 1 sports figure on this year’s FanSided 250? Of course not.

Patrick Mahomes has had himself a year in 2020. For starters, he and the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV (Kansas City’s first in 50 years) and Mahomes won Super Bowl MVP honors. The Chiefs trailed by 10 points with seven minutes remaining in the game and Mahomes was able to bring them back in epic fashion, much like he’s done throughout his entire career.

After winning a Super Bowl title at the ripe age of 24, Mahomes was rewarded for his efforts with a 10-year contract extension worth $500 million, tying him to Kansas City until he’s in his mid-30s. No one had any complaints with the contract because, without Mahomes, the Chiefs aren’t the team they currently are. He’s changed this franchise completely.

Taking things off of the football field and things got even better for Mahomes. He proposed to his long-time girlfriend Brittany Matthews and the two are expecting their first child together (a baby girl). He also became an owner of the Kansas City Royals.

It’s no wonder that Patrick Mahomes was crowned the No. 1 sports figure on the FanSided 250.

While Mahomes was named the best sports figure in 2020, he actually ended up at No. 2 on the FanSided 250. The Los Angeles Lakers took the top spot this year.

Obviously, Chiefs Kingdom thinks Mahomes should be No. 1 on any positive list, but I’m not going to argue against the Lakers being No. 1 with the kind of year they had. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant died earlier this year in a helicopter crash and the Lakers went on to win a whacky NBA season in his honor. They also have Lebron James, who many argue is greater than Michael Jordan.

Yes, Mahomes is awesome, but he’ll have plenty of opportunities to reach No. 1 on the FanSided 250 again. It’s hard to see the now 25-year-old ever having a better year than he did in 2020, but maybe if the Chiefs win another Super Bowl in 2021 AND he gets league MVP, that could top it.
