KC Chiefs: Quarterbacks key to change of fortune in Broncos rivalry

Patrick Mahomes took over full-time the next season and continued the KC Chiefs’ dominance over the Denver Broncos.

It wasn’t always a picnic for the Chiefs under Mahomes, as the Broncos made a game of it early on in Mahomes’ career. Recently it’s been all Chiefs though, as they’ve blown out the Broncos in each of the last three games.

Mahomes might not have dominated Denver early in his career, but he always did something that was talked about at the water cooler the next day. From his first-ever comeback win to the left-handed pass, Broncos fans have grown to hate Mahomes the same way that Chiefs fans hated Manning.

As of now, Mahomes is 6-0 against the Denver Broncos and he’ll look to make it 7-0 this Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium. He hasn’t had much trouble against them lately (though it is worth noting that one of the blowouts was when he was injured early in the game, so he didn’t contribute to the butt whooping that KC put on that night) and hopefully, his dominance against them continues on Sunday night.

The Broncos tried to catch up to the Chiefs offensively over the offseason, spending their first two draft picks on wide receivers. It became obvious that Denver knew they had to keep up with the Chiefs in games rather than focus on stopping them because that’s proven difficult for any team since Mahomes took over full-time.

The Chiefs and Broncos have essentially turned into the other team in recent years. Denver was so good for so long when they had Peyton Manning and plowed over the divisional foes on their way to an AFC West title every year. They had a seven-game winning streak over the Chiefs, who at that point in time was not an organization many took seriously.

After the Broncos fell to the Chiefs for the first time since Manning joined them, they did go on to win a Super Bowl, but it’s all been downhill ever since. Manning retired and the Broncos have had a really tough time finding a quarterback who can help them turn things around.

The Chiefs became the new powerhouse of the AFC West, winning four straight division titles (likely a fifth this year), finding their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, and winning a Super Bowl in the 2019 season.

Quarterbacks have been the key in this rivalry and if that continues to be the case, the Broncos are going to be in for a world of hurt for a very long time.
