KC Chiefs: Five wide receivers to potentially target in 2021 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
Every year there is a prospect or two that bears watching as an intriguing name of risk and reward and this year, a name to follow is Clemson receiver, Justyn Ross. After taking the college football scene by storm as a freshman dominating Alabama in the 2018 National Championship game, Ross in 2018 and 2019 totaled 1,865 yards receiving and 17 touchdowns on 112 catches. Coming into the start of the 2020 season, Ross was a name to follow.
In June it was discovered Ross had issues with his spine that would require surgery and force him to miss the 2020 season. With any neck/spinal injury, teams will and should be concerned about future injuries. However, if the neck issue is deemed to be okay, and after the surgery, it’s all systems go, Ross is intriguing.
He’s not what the Chiefs usually look for in a receiver. An undersized group of speedsters, Ross stands 6’3″ and probably tops out in the low 4.5’s with a 40. A smooth player with some quickness, Ross would provide that underneath big, physical target for the Chiefs while other players work their way down the field. Ross can work his way down the field, he’s just not the speed player the Chiefs are putting out there.
Ross at times appears to be similar to former Clemson receiver Higgins, currently with the Bengals, who has posted 43 catches and 629 yards as a rookie. Ross isn’t the guy that’s going to break the top off the defense, but between scheme and Mahomes, could be a chain-moving contributor for the Chiefs offense.

The Chiefs are going to target a receiver in the draft in the first three rounds, and currently, I am viewing Houston’s Marquez Stevenson as the guy. Good speed and displays an ability to run good routes, there is the ability to develop at a minimum to a contributor on a rookie contract but I believe can make big plays in the offense.
The first-round pick should be dedicated to a defender, my preference is on defense at cornerback, but this team appears uninterested in the position early. They could also target a tight end early (they will take one of those in the draft as well).
The Kansas City Chiefs need to draft a receiver and any of these five players would be an excellent addition to this already-prolific offense.
