KC Chiefs: Five wide receivers to potentially target in 2021 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
Marquez Stevenson is a name Chiefs fans should remember, as he would be a great fit in the Chiefs offense and an ideal developmentary receiver. His speed jumps off the screen and he displays quality hands and has good size. In a draft deep at wide receiver following a draft that was deep at receiver, Stevenson is a name that could move into the top 100, possibly to the bottom of the second round.
I want to see Stevenson run better routes. As can happen with really fast players, the school works on ways to get the ball to them more than refining route technique and diverse route trees. Stevenson needs to show better technique, specifically with his cuts and precision with his routes. Also, at times he is a body catcher, which may work with the quarterback at Houston, but if you try to catch a Patrick Mahomes pass with your chest, the injured list is in your future.
Stevenson is a name I will keep an eye on. He is doing a lot now what Hardman did at Georgia, which is to get him the ball and watch him outrun angles and past defenders. The Houston offense does a lot of passing, so he has experience running both short and deep routes on both sides of the offensive formation.
Is he starting for the Chiefs in 2021? Probably not. Can he contribute and develop into a starter? Absolutely.
