Kansas City Chiefs: Five players who won’t be back for 2021 season
Kansas City Chiefs who won’t be back in 2021 — No. 1: Sammy Watkins
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Remember when I mentioned earlier how the Chiefs were supposed to be in a wide receiver predicament last offseason? A large part of why was because of Sammy Watkins‘ contract, which he was kind enough to restructure so that he could stay in KC for one more year.
After this season, however, it’s time to say good-bye to Watkins. Not only has he not done what he was paid to do (except for in the playoffs — he was awesome then!), but he’s been injured a lot during his Chiefs tenure. For a guy making $9 million a year, that’s simply not going to cut it.
Watkins played in the first five games of the season, but we haven’t seen him since. During those five games, he had 222 yards with two touchdowns, so it’s not like he was lighting it up on offense. His best game was in the season opener against Houston where he had seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Watkins was a big time player for the Chiefs in the playoffs and if he is healthy enough to play by then and replicates his postseason success once more, maybe there’s a way the Chiefs can merit keeping him for one more season. If that were to happen, it’s very likely that other teams would come calling, as Watkins is just 27 years old.
The injuries have been a concern throughout Watkins’ entire career, so Chiefs fans knew him being out for a majority of the regular season was possible. It’s going to be the reason why he won’t be back with the team in 2021.
