Kansas City Chiefs stand pat at the trade deadline
The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t bring in any big names at the trade deadline.
The only move made by the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the NFL trade deadline was them shipping running back DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a sixth round draft pick. This move wasn’t a shocking one, as the Chiefs have little use for Washington with all of their other running back options and in exchange, they get a higher draft pick.
Otherwise, the defending Super Bowl champions decided to stand pat at the trade deadline. This doesn’t mean they can’t add other players later on, as we saw late last year how they claimed Terrell Suggs off of waivers. Situations like that will still happen, but for now, the Chiefs decided to keep their team as is.
The positions needing the most improvement were at offensive line, linebacker, and cornerback, but the Chiefs obviously decided they were good to go at all three. Mitchell Schwartz will return at right tackle soon hopefully and the unit has had some decent games. Linebacker hasn’t looked nearly as bad as it did all last year. Cornerback will be okay once L’Jarius Sneed returns from injured reserve.
A trade would have been fun, but the Kansas City Chiefs are 7-1 with the team they currently have.
The NFL trade deadline isn’t nearly as fun as the MLB one is where it feels like all of the teams are bouncing trades off of each other and trying to make things as entertaining and suspenseful as possible. Part of the problem with the NFL trade deadline is that it’s held too early in the season and some teams are still trying to figure out if they’re a contender or not.
It’d be better to have the deadline in another two or three weeks, as that’d be past the halfway mark of the season and teams would know if they’re going to make a run at the playoffs or be looking ahead to next year. But, the trade deadline just passed and the Super Bowl champs opted to not trade for any big time playmakers.
They had signed Le’Veon Bell a few weeks ago after he was released by the Jets and that very well could have been Kansas City’s “big move” during the course of the season. Bell adds electricity to this offense and will be a huge contributor during the playoffs.
The team is 7-1 and should win their division pretty handily. Plus, Brett Veach likely wanted to retain as many draft picks as possible as the cap situation could make it tricky to sign key contributors in the coming years (then again, we say that every year and Veach continues to surprise us).
When it comes down to it, yeah it would have been fun to add a new face to this team whether on offense or defense, but the Kansas City Chiefs are 7-1 with the team they have and this is the team they’re rolling with moving forward.
