The KC Chiefs should consider trading for Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Cornerback is always a position the Kansas City Chiefs could use help at and it’s no different this time around. After an impressive start for fourth round rookie L’Jarius Sneed, he was injured and that once again put the Chiefs in a compromising position.

Bashaud Breeland has been back from his suspension for a few weeks now, but he’s been just okay. Charvarius Ward has regressed after a really solid 2019 season. Rashad Fenton is a nice player, but the fact of the matter is that the Chiefs could use a shutdown cornerback to add to their secondary.

That guy would undoubtedly by Stephon Gilmore of the New England Patriots. Gilmore has been one of the best at his position for nearly a decade now, having spent the first five years of his career in Buffalo before signing with New England in 2017. Gilmore has gotten better with age, being named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 at the age of 29.

The KC Chiefs could use a cornerback like Stephon Gilmore in their quest to run it back.

The big thing to consider anytime the Chiefs want to trade for someone is what does their contract look like? Well, Gilmore would be affordable. He’s under contract in 2021 and is due $7 million next year. That’s a deal the Chiefs could afford.

The Chiefs don’t need to trade for a cornerback. They’ve shown that they can win and play pretty sound defense without a star at the position plus they’ll be getting Sneed back sooner rather than later, which will most definitely help assuming he plays at the level he was before getting injured.

Still, Gilmore would give a team with aspirations of winning a second straight Super Bowl even more confidence moving forward. The Patriots haven’t been in this position for a long time, as they’re used to being in playoff contention every year, but that isn’t the case in 2020. They very well might consider trading Gilmore and getting some kind of compensation that could help them rebuild.

This time last year a lot of fans wanted the Chiefs to trade for Jalen Ramsey because of the lack of cornerback depth. Ramsey would have been great, but the Chiefs proved they didn’t need him and avoided having to pay him all of that money. Gilmore wouldn’t require a big contract, as he’s under contract next year too, so he’d be a nice player to trade for.
