If the Kansas City Royals roster is not ready to compete for a playoff spot in 2021, then now is the offseason to trade fan favorite catcher Salvador Perez.

Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman, general manager Dayton Moore, the rest of the front office, and the scouting department have to make some tough decisions this offseason. The biggest question they need to be asking is: Are the Royals ready to compete for a postseason berth in 2021?

In my opinion, the answer is no. This team still has some time before they’ll truly be ready to compete for a World Series title. Fortunately, they have the luxury to with their younger players, but the same cannot be said for their veteran players.

Salvador Perez will be 31-years-old in his final contract year for the Royals in 2021. Historically catchers do not project well after age 30 when they have caught this many innings (concussions, knees, eyes, etc). Because of that, paired with the fact that 2021 is the final year of Perez’s contract, the 2021 offseason is the right time to trade away the long-time Royals catcher.

That might be hard to hear, but let’s take a look at some possible trades that involve Perez.
