Kansas City Chiefs: Three players to consider trading for at 2020 deadline
By Chris Clark
As the 2020 trade deadline approaches, the Kansas City Chiefs should inquire about these players.
As the 2020 NFL deadline approaches, it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Because of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of next year’s salary cap, there may not be much movement. But as teams journey toward postseason success, they’ll still be looking to capitalize at the midway point in the season. And the Kansas City Chiefs should be no different.
The Chiefs mainly have needs along the offensive line. With player opt-outs and injuries, this year’s offensive line looks much different. And while the offensive line may have more pressing needs, that doesn’t mean that Brett Veach won’t be shopping around for help elsewhere. Let’s take a look at who Kansas City could potentially be interested in.
Connor Williams
Before the season started, no one could have predicted the Chiefs’ starting offensive line by the midway point in the season. The doctor, Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff, and 2020 third-round draft pick, Lucas Niang, both opted out for reasons related to COVID-19. In the wake of that, the Chiefs signed former pro-bowler Kelechi Osemele to a one-year deal. Unfortunately, he went down to injury in Week 5, injuring both knees in the same play.
Starting in Week 6 against Buffalo, the Chiefs elected to start Daniel Kilgore at center in place of Austin Rieter. Then, in that game against the Bills, the Chiefs’ best and most consistent offensive lineman, Mitchell Schwartz left the game with a back injury. Schwartz, unfortunately, had to miss his first career start in Week 7 and may miss even more time in the coming weeks. Needless to say, the Chiefs’ offensive line has seen lots of change in a short amount of time and could use some reinforcements.
One player that Kansas City could pursue is Cowboys guard, Connor Williams. Williams is a 2018 second-round draft pick and has spent time on one of the league’s better offensive lines. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, this season has gotten off to a really unthinkable start. Starting 2-5, new head coach Mike McCarthy is likely reeling, especially with a season-ending injury to star quarterback Dak Prescott.
With such a jarring start, the Cowboys should look sell off a few assets and begin building for next year. The Chiefs could then be a benefactor of a minor rebuild in Dallas by potentially acquiring Williams, who’s in year three of his rookie contract.
Negotiations may be tough, as Jerry Jones will likely want some value out of his former second-round pick, but that doesn’t mean a deal can’t get done. If a trade could be reached, Williams would provide a big help for this season and beyond if a long-term deal were to materialize in Kansas City.
