The KC Chiefs have their franchise quarterback, but should they consider trading for their future backup quarterback?

The Kansas City Chiefs struck gold when they traded up to the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to select Patrick Mahomes. He’s been the gift that keeps on giving and the organization gave him a $500 million contract for his efforts.

All of that needs to be said because this article brings up the question of whether or not the Chiefs are a team that could make sense to trade for Dwayne Haskins at the deadline. Haskins was the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and it’s looking like the Washington Football Team is already giving up on the former Ohio State signal caller.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, it appears to be a real possibility that Washington trades Haskins at the deadline. When thinking about that, could the Chiefs be a potential suitor?

The KC Chiefs don’t need a quarterback, but having a young backup in Dwayne Haskins isn’t a bad idea.

If Haskins came to Kansas City, it wouldn’t be to take Mahomes’ job. Instead, he’d get the opportunity to sit behind Mahomes and could fill in for him if (knock on wood) he were to get injured, have to go on the COVID list, or if the Chiefs found themselves in a blowout. Right now, the Chiefs have a veteran quarterback in Chad Henne and also have XFL standout Jordan Ta’amu around as well.

Because of that, people wouldn’t see the fit for Haskins, but he’s already more proven than Ta’amu and having a coach like Andy Reid could be what the kid needs. He hasn’t even been bad in his 13 total NFL games, but Washington is a bad fit and a bad organization. Getting somewhere like Kansas City could do wonders for his game and it’d be nice to have a young, reliable backup behind Mahomes for a few years.

This isn’t something I expect to happen, as the Kansas City Chiefs have bigger needs at the deadline and backup quarterback isn’t on that list. It is interesting to think about, however, as Haskins is 23 years old and really could provide the next backup to Mahomes.

If nothing else, maybe Haskins plays well in a game and a team is willing to give up a few draft picks to acquire him. That’d also be something that could work in KC’s favor.

So, what do you think, Chiefs fans? Is this something you’d consider or are you fine with the team rolling with Henne as the QB2?
