Kansas City Chiefs need more help from their other wide receivers
The Kansas City Chiefs offense needs help in the wide receiver department.
Most people think the Kansas City Chiefs offense has way too many weapons on offense and while they do have a lot of talented players, the wide receiver position honestly isn’t all that great outside of Tyreek Hill. This is concerning for a team who thrives on throwing the ball and expecting a receiver to catch it and make a play.
In the Chiefs’ 40-32 loss to the Las Vegas on Sunday, Hill and Travis Kelce accounted for 186 of the 340 yards the team put up offensively through the air. Kelce had 108 yards off of eight catches while Hill had 78 yards off of three catches. The next highest leader in receiving yards was Mecole Hardman with 50 off of two receptions.
It was especially bad once Sammy Watkins went down and didn’t return to the game. Watkins might have only had two catches for 24 yards, but one of those catches was for a touchdown and an impressive one at that, as he scrambled around to help make the play happen.
Here were the rest of the totals amongst those incorporated in the receiving game on Sunday:
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire – 3 catches, 40 yards
- Byron Pringle – 1 catch, 23 yards
- Darrel Williams – 1 catch, 15 yards
- Demarcus Robinson – 2 catches, 2 yards
- Nick Keizer – 1 target, 0 catches
The most concerning part here is Robinson’s numbers. The Chiefs re-signed this guy to be a WR3/4 and he’s been nearly invisible through the first five games of the season, currently sitting with just eight catches for 50 yards. We all figured Hardman would jump him on the depth chart this year, but with how much Patrick Mahomes likes to spread the football around, one would think Robinson could manage more than just two measly yards in a game.
Everyone knows that Kelce and Hill are going to garner most of the attention in the passing game and that’s why it’s so important for these other guys to step up. That’s why the Chiefs paid Watkins what they did and while he only had two catches in the game, one of them was for a touchdown. Also, the rest of the offense tanked after Watkins exited with an injury, so that obviously implies that he was a big piece for the Raiders to game plan around.
The five receivers Chiefs fans expected to see the most this year were Hill, Watkins, Hardman, Robinson, and Pringle, and to this point, Hill and Watkins have been the main threats. Hardman didn’t have a bad game, but a WR3 needs to step it up, especially when the WR2 goes down.
If the Kansas City Chiefs want to run it back this season, their other wide receivers need to step it up and make plays. Hill and Kelce can’t do everything for this offense.
