KC Chiefs: Seven things we learned in Week 5 loss to Raiders
The KC Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season, losing 40-32 to the Raiders. What did we learn in the loss?
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game since last November and it had to happen sometime, folks. Unfortunately it just so happened to come against the Las Vegas Raiders, who will probably hang a banner celebrating this victory in their new stadium. It had been three years since the Raiders last knocked off the Chiefs, so props to them for accomplishing the impossible.
Okay, enough pettiness. Seriously, the Raiders played well and deserved to win this game. Carr hadn’t played well at Arrowhead prior to this and he shredded that label and secured his first win in Kansas City (now sitting at 1-6 at Arrowhead). I didn’t think the Raiders had much of a chance in this game and I was wrong.
Now, let’s get to what I, and the rest of Chiefs Kingdom, learned about the 4-1 Chiefs after their 40-32 loss to Las Vegas.
1. Maybe the defense isn’t as good as we thought
Less than a week ago, I said that this Chiefs defense could win another Super Bowl. They displayed that against the Patriots on Monday night, but in hindsight, maybe I jumped to conclusions there because they certainly didn’t look like a Super Bowl caliber unit on Sunday afternoon.
As mentioned above, Carr had a career day at Arrowhead, throwing for 347 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His previous high was 222 yards and two touchdowns, so this was by far his best performance at Arrowhead and now the guy knows he can win in Kansas City. So that’s never good.
The run defense was atrocious, allowing 144 yards on the ground and failing to stop any run from up the middle. This was the Chiefs’ Achilles Heel in past seasons and it looked like they finally were able to fix it, but the run defense of old returned on Sunday and if this is the way they continue to play, then no, this unit will not be good enough to win a Super Bowl.
After winning it for the Chiefs in Week 4, the defense was a big reason as to why the team lost in Week 5. It’s concerning and now we know what they need to work on.
