4. Conclusion: a Complete Team

The biggest reason why the Kansas City Chiefs have been able to start the season 4-0 against three 2019 AFC playoff teams and one division opponent is that they’re putting it all together. They haven’t been perfect, as seen against the Chargers in Week 2, but they are managing to put things together enough to get the job done. The fourth reason why the Chiefs are 4-0 is that they’re playing complementary football. When one phase of the game seems to struggle, the other two phases seem to hold down the fort.

The offense has been able to overcome three top-eleven defenses, while the defense has been able to hold quarterbacks like Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson in check. And the special teams are holding up their end of the bargain as well, being a top-ten unit themselves. That means that all three units are operating in the top half of the league. This is a sign of a balanced team playing some good football.

It’s hard to know how long it’s been since the league has seen a team this balanced, with this much talent, with such great coaching at the helm. Other teams around the league had better revere this team differently than any normally tough opponent. When facing the Chiefs, teams must go for it on fourth down in Chiefs’ territory, not settle for field goals, and never let their foot off the gas. Anything less will result in less than success.

Looking at the rest of the schedule, the Chiefs will still face some tougher opponents like the Bills, Saints, and possibly Buccaneers. But this four-game stretch to start the season will certainly be the hardest stretch throughout. Anything can happen in the midst of this COVID-19 season but if no disruptions happen, an undefeated season actually becomes more promising.

With the offense, defense, and special teams all having each other’s back, it’d be great to see these reasons take them from 4-0 all the way to 19-0.
