3. Special Teams

Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers was an odd game. Just moments before the game, the Chargers had to start rookie quarterback, Justin Herbert, in place of Tyrod Taylor. Taylor unfortunately suffered a punctured lung while the team doctor was administering pain medication from a previous rib injury. Fortunately for the Chargers, though, they quickly found out that Herbert looked well worth that high first-round draft pick.

What followed was a sluggish game offensively for Kansas City, at least until late in the game when they seemed to find enough to send the game into overtime. Then, the Chiefs’ special teams unit sealed the deal. After hitting a 58-yard field goal earlier in the game, Harrison Butker then hit another 58-yarder to end the game and give the Chiefs a win. While Butker has struggled with some extra points, he at least gets it done when it matters most.

One exciting addition to this year’s special teams is punter, Tommy Townsend. For nearly a decade and a half, Chiefs Kingdom was accustomed to having the consistency of one of the best punters in the game on the field. Dustin Colquitt seemed to be a permanent fixture in a Chiefs uniform, at least until this last offseason.  The Chiefs’ brass decided to move on without the longest-tenured Chief and find a cheaper, younger alternative. He hasn’t disappointed.

Electing to give that roster spot to Townsend meant that Kansas City could possibly encounter some turbulence, especially with no preseason action. But Townsend seems to be another one of Veach’s great moves. According to PFF KC Chiefs, Townsend shined in Week 4, becoming the highest graded punter by a longshot. While Chiefs fans don’t really want to see their long-haired punter come on the field, at least they know that he’s becoming one of the best in the game.
