The KC Chiefs play their second straight Monday night game, but this one wasn’t initially supposed to be on Monday night.

After news broke that Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ game against the New England Patriots was in jeopardy. After no more positive tests came back, however, the game was tentatively scheduled for Monday evening and there had even been talk that it could be played on Tuesday night.

Even with it being held on Monday (assuming that still does happen), the NFL needs to consider shuffling the Chiefs’ schedule a bit. In Week 5, they’ll face the Raiders at noon on Sunday and then have a short week before facing the Bills on Thursday Night Football in Week 6. I’ll let Field Yates take it from here.

As Field mentioned above, IF this game were to be played on Tuesday (and yes, that’s still a possibility), the league could not let the Chiefs play three games in nine days. With how physical of a sport football is, that could absolutely take the wind out of KC’s sails.

Fortunately, this is a good team with a legitimate chance to make it back to the Super Bowl, so one would think the league would accommodate them should this become an issue. It also helps that they have the best quarterback in the league, which is another reason the NFL would need to take another look at this situation.

Honestly, even if the Chiefs play on Monday, the league might want to consider pushing back that Week 6 match-up to the following Sunday or to later in the year. I know that’d probably lead to no games being on Thursday that week, but is that really important right now? If the focus is on keeping players healthy, then having a team play three games in nine or 10 days seems a bit much.

While we’re all fortunate to have football, COVID-19 is going to make it difficult for the league to carry on every game as previously planned (see the Titans/Steelers game) and if there truly are times when the league can move games around, they might have to consider moving that Chiefs/Bills game either to that Sunday or to later in the year so that this team isn’t at a major disadvantage moving forward.
