Kansas City Chiefs take advantage of Patriots miscues in double digit win
The Kansas City Chiefs were able to capitalize off of New England’s mistakes in Week 4.
Well, it took awhile for the Kansas City Chiefs offense to get going, but fortunately the defense came ready to play, holding the Patriots to just three points in the first half. New England honestly should have tied it at the half, but thanks to Taco Charlton‘s hit and Brian Hoyer‘s lack of remembering how many timeouts he had, it was 6-3 Chiefs at the half.
The Chiefs didn’t find the end zone until there were 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter and from there, they kept rolling. While the offense did enough to change the direction of this game, the defense deserves a huge props for what they were able to do. Sure, they did so against Hoyer, but teams can only play the players across from them on the field.
The defense continued to look like a Super Bowl unit, collecting four total turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble) while also limiting the Patriots’ offense from doing much damage at all. It was an impressive performance, but the Chiefs were also given some big breaks in this one.
For one, the Patriots dropped two easy interceptions. Second, there was that play where Mahomes seemingly fumbled the football, but it was ruled as an incomplete pass and the Chiefs were able to quickly punt the ball away instead. There was the mistake made by Hoyer in the final seconds of the first half that ensured New England wouldn’t score a field goal. There were three total picks between Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham with one leading a pick six thanks to Tyrann Mathieu.
So while at the end of the day, the Kansas City Chiefs won this game convincingly, it didn’t feel that way until later on. As Tony Romo noted several times during the game, it’s hard to hold the Chiefs offense down for long and we saw that here once again with the touchdowns by Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman, but even still, this game goes to the defense for sure.
It was great to see this game happen considering it didn’t seem very likely to take place just two days ago, but luckily it was played. The Chiefs did catch a break by not having to face Cam Newton, but for three quarters, the Patriots made a game of this and really slowed down the KC offense.
With the win, the Kansas City Chiefs move to 4-0 on the year and will gear up for a home game against the Las Vegas Raiders next week. Assuming the schedule doesn’t get shifted, it’ll be their first noon kickoff this season.
