The KC Chiefs were supposed to host the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon, but that game is in jeopardy after Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19.

It was only a matter of time before COVID-19 outbreaks or potential outbreaks occurred in the NFL and that’s been the storyline this week. First, it was surrounding the Tennessee Titans who are still having tests come back positive and their game with the Steelers getting postponed as a result. Now, the Kansas City Chiefs make the headlines too, as their opponent this weekend saw their quarterback test positive for the coronavirus.

The news dropped on Saturday morning and initially Newton was ruled as out for the game. Obviously with a novel virus and how easily it spreads, the game had to be in question because the NFL has to prevent any possible outbreaks.

The Falcons had a similar situation last week where A.J. Terrell tested positive, didn’t play, and no other positive tests came back. That was before the Titans’ outbreak though and the league is going to do whatever they can to prevent an outbreak in the league.

The KC Chiefs aren’t going to take the field on Sunday.

This situation is bigger because of Cam Newton being a household name, but we’ll continue to see positive tests pop up around the league and shuffling games is nearly a certainty. The Titans/Steelers game was pushed to October 25th and we could see the Chiefs game get pushed back to later in the season as well, though Adam Schefter did tweet that a Tuesday night game could be what ends up happening.

While Newton is the big name in this situation, Chiefs reserve quarterback Jordan Ta’amu also tested positive, meaning there’s now officially a case in the Chiefs clubhouse. We’d have been foolish not to think these positive tests would eventually pile up in the league with how big rosters and staffs are, but the league had been doing a good job for the first month of the season at testing.

For now, we don’t know for sure when the Chiefs will play the Patriots, but it’s looking like a near certainty that it won’t be on Sunday at 3:25.
