Kansas State Football: Chris Klieman moves to 2-0 vs Oklahoma
What a win for Kansas State football! Chris Klieman is now 2-0 against the Oklahoma Sooners, which is crazy.
After a rough week one loss to Arkansas State, the Kansas State Wildcats had a really tough game in their second outing of the season. They traveled to Norman for a date with the third ranked Oklahoma Sooners, a team who they handled in Manhattan last year.
No one really thought the Wildcats would be able to replicate that performance again, but here we are. K-State defeated the Sooners once again and second year head coach Chris Klieman is undefeated against Lincoln Riley and the Sooners.
It sure didn’t look like things would go Kansas State’s way early on, as the Sooners got off to a 21-7 start and carried that lead into the locker room for the half. That was where things changed and where the Wildcats came out swinging.
Skylar Thompson out-dueled Spencer Rattler, throwing for 300 yards for the first time in his Kansas State career. He finished the day going 18 of 25 for 334 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 10 yards and three touchdowns. Rattler had more yards with 387 and threw for four touchdowns, but also tossed three interceptions including the game-sealing one in the final minute of the game.
Kansas State football has long struggled against Oklahoma, but Chris Klieman is dominant against them.
This was the first time EVER that Kansas State knocked off a top three opponent in the polls. When K-State took down the Sooners last year, OU was the fifth ranked team in the nation. None of us are sure of what it is, but Kansas State has Lincoln Riley and the Sooners’ number.
It’s too bad we didn’t see this same team two weeks ago in the home opener, but this win will spark something in the Wildcats and they’ll be able to turn their season around now. They’ve been hit hard with COVID-19 cases, but still went into Norman, put up 38 points, and held the high-flying Sooners to 35 points and just two second half touchdowns.
Furthermore, Rattler was a Heisman Trophy candidate ahead of this one (and probably still will be) and the Wildcats picked him off three times. That’s pretty darn impressive for a defense who looked to be pretty weak two weeks ago in the loss to Arkansas State.
Now the question remains – Would Arkansas State beat Oklahoma? (Sarcasm, but I also really want to know)
