It’s the final series for the Kansas City Royals and even though they’re out of postseason contention, there are still plenty of things to keep an eye on.

This has been an interesting season for the Kansas City Royals and even though the season won’t end with a playoff appearance, no one really realistically thought that would happen anyway.

With that in mind, what should Royals fans be watching for as the team faces Detroit for the final series of the season?

3. Does the bullpen finish strong?

One of the biggest surprises for the Royals this season was how impressive their bullpen was. They were able to trade Trevor Rosenthal at the deadline due to his bounce back season and the Royals saw the emergence of Josh Staumont this year.

Staumont was a wizard, twirling 23 innings and posting a solid 1.57 ERA during that time. Greg Holland stepped into his old closer role and while he’s not the Greg Holland of old, he’s still been very good, locking down 6 saves and has an ERA under 2.

Continuing to build this bullpen is the most important thing for the Royals moving forward and we saw just how far this organization can go when they have a lockdown bullpen. It worked 5 years ago, as it got them a World Series title, so that’s the key here.

Kyle Zimmer also showed promise out of the pen and seeing him finally contribute something to this organization was nice to see. Building this pen around Staumont, Zimmer, Tyler Zuber, and hopefully a few more up and coming prospects is a big storyline to watch moving forward.
