Nebraska Football: Revised schedule doesn’t give Huskers many winnable games

Big Ten football is back! Yay! Unfortunately, Nebraska football has a brutally tough slate for their revised 2020 schedule.

It’s exciting that Big Ten decided to go through with football this fall, but it’s going to be tough sledding for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as they try to weave their way through their 2020 schedule, which is absolutely brutal.

Here’s the schedule:

  • October 24th – at Ohio State
  • October 31st – Wisconsin
  • November 7th – at Northwestern
  • November 14th – Penn State
  • November 21st – Illinois
  • November 28th – at Iowa
  • December 5th – at Purdue
  • December 12th – Minnesota

The revised schedule gives Nebraska football, at best, 3 wins in 2020, and that’s if they’re lucky.

Let’s just be blunt here. There’s no way Nebraska is beating Ohio State, so they’ll start the 2020 season at 0-1 and very likely at 0-2 since they’ve had a great deal of trouble with Wisconsin since joining the conference.

The 3 wins I mentioned above could come against Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue, but none are givens by any means. Northwestern has proven to be a frustrating foe for the Huskers, Illinois made a bowl game last year, and Purdue has really had Nebraska’s number.

If Nebraska can pull out wins in all 3 of those games and somehow stun at least 1 of their other opponents, I’d be content with that season because honestly, a winless 2020 season is most definitely on the table here for the Cornhuskers.

Their original 2020 schedule had the Huskers playing Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, and Minnesota in 5 straight weeks (not in this order), so while they’ll now get those games broken up a bit, they still have to face some of the toughest teams in college football.

Yes, Big Ten football returning is great news, but can Nebraska football get enough wins to make this a successful season? With this schedule ahead of them, it doesn’t appear likely they’ll be able to do that, but maybe the Cornhuskers will surprise us all and pull off a few stunning wins this season.

Scott Frost was one of the Big Ten coaches pushing for the conference to play, and many on social media joked that he was “rewarded” for that by having to open the season against the toughest team in the conference in Ohio State.

It’s going to be really tough to go into Columbus (even if it’s not a full stadium) and get a win, but that was the card Nebraska was dealt and now it’s time to go out there and play football.

Go Big Red!
