KC Chiefs: Time for a way too early mock draft for the 2021 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
Round 2, Pick 64: Chazz Surratt, LB (North Carolina)
Yes, linebacker is the perhaps the least important position group on a defense, as corner and pass rusher are perhaps the second and third most important position group on the roster behind quarterback. However, the Chiefs want and look for linebackers and Chazz Surratt is a great athlete still learning the finer points of the linebacker position.
A former quarterback, Surratt is playing his second year at linebacker and has really burst on the scene. With Damien Wilson a free agent and Anthony Hitchens’ roster spot always a tenuous proposition, the linebackers need reinforcements, and Surratt fits the bill. Between him and 2020 second round selection Willie Gay Jr, both players are quick and fast and very athletic.
Surratt will need time, as Gay does too, so he’s not a start right away type of prospect, at least not likely. However, he’s a ceiling type prospect with good instincts and size that with coaching and development could be a real play maker for the Chiefs at a position group that lacks the semblance of making plays.
