The KC Chiefs haven’t had much trouble against the AFC West in recent years and will look to get off to a 1-0 divisional record on Sunday when they take on the Chargers.

There was a time where the Kansas City Chiefs weren’t always competitive in the AFC West, but those days are long gone now. Not only have the Chiefs been competitive in the division, they’ve flat out owned their divisional opponents in recent years.

This has been a division that tends to belong to one team for a long stretch of time. The Chargers won it every year from 2006-2009, Denver from 2011-2015, and the Chiefs from 2016-present, and that’s expected to remain the case this year, as the Chiefs are the heavy favorites to win the division. That’d give them their fifth straight AFC West title.

Part of why it’s been so easy for the Chiefs to win the AFC West the past few years is because of how well they’ve been against the teams within the division. Last year they went a perfect 6-0 against their divisional foes and only one of those games was close (the Chargers game in Mexico City). The year before, KC went 5-1 against their divisional foes, losing a Thursday night game to the Chargers late in the year.

That means Patrick Mahomes has gone 12*-1 against the AFC West since he took over as a starter (remember – he started the week 17 game in 2017 in Denver). He only lost to the Chargers in 2018, but otherwise, this division has been a piece of cake for the reigning Super Bowl MVP.

*I gave him credit for the win in Denver last year despite getting injured early on and missing the rest of the game.

While the rest of the division added weapons to try and keep up with the Chiefs this year, we saw in week 1 how the Chiefs are still head and shoulders above the pack.

While it’s tough to go a perfect 6-0 against the division in back-to-back years, the Kansas City Chiefs can most definitely pull it off again. They’ll get their first AFC West match-up in week 2, as they’ll head to Los Angeles to play the Chargers in their new stadium.

The Chargers have played Kansas City tough over the years and their defense is very good, but this should be a game that the Chiefs reign supreme in. Look for KC to have an 1-0 divisional record after this weekend’s slate of games.
