3 reasons why Kansas City Chiefs will dominate Texans in Week 1
By Chris Clark
The Kansas City Chiefs open up the 2020 NFL season on Thursday night, hosting the Houston Texans. While Houston is a good team, the Chiefs will begin their season with a dominating win.
The 2020 NFL season gets rolling on Thursday night and fans are hyped to get back to football. As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs get to host the season opener, and thankfully, the league picked a great match-up to start.
The Houston Texans come to town as one of the better teams in the AFC and on a mission to avenge last season’s playoff loss in Kansas City. It’s great to have the season start with two teams who have clear and legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
The Texans are a talented team, but really shouldn’t be a big threat to the top team in the league. Kansas City easily has all the right pieces in place to reach the Super Bowl once again. As long as last season’s mountaintop experience doesn’t hinder them, the Chiefs will handle the Texans on opening night.
Here’s why the Kansas City Chiefs will dominate the Texans to get the 2020 season going.
3. More Talented Roster
It’s pretty plain to see that Kansas City has a more talented roster than Houston. Starting with the quarterback position on down, there’s not a position on the Texans roster that looks to have a greater talent in place.
It’s great to see a new crop of young talented quarterbacks go head to head to start the 2020 season, but Patrick Mahomes is clearly a better quarterback than Deshaun Watson. Watson is a really great quarterback, but until he collects a league MVP award, a Super Bowl win, and a Super Bowl MVP award, he won’t be put on the same level as Mahomes.
With the departure of DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona, the Chiefs’ receiving corps easily looks to be the better group over Houston. The Texans do some have talented receivers in Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, and Kenny Stills, but that group is still no Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Mecole Hardman.
Also, there is no tight end on their roster that comes even close to a player of Travis Kelce‘s caliber. While both of these teams have question marks at the cornerback position, the Chiefs’ receivers should more easily be able to take advantage of their group in this matchup.
Speaking of defense, these teams could be more evenly matched overall. The Texans do have J.J. Watt, who is surefire Hall of Famer but is aging, while the Chiefs have names like Frank Clark, Chris Jones, and Tyrann Mathieu.
Those names on Kansas City’s roster really seem to signal more firepower over what Houston brings to the table. Also, considering that the Chiefs put up 51 pounds against that defense just last January, it’s not likely they’ve improved incredibly over the last nine months.
One addition that’s worth noting for Houston during this offseason is their acquisition of running back David Johnson. Unfortunately for Johnson, he’s had his share of struggles with injuries in recent years.
When he’s healthy, though, he can easily be one of the top running backs in the entire league. Even so, the overall advantage here should go to Kansas City, who is set to start a highly talented first-round draft pick in Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Thursday night.
