Offense (26 Total)

The only spots that are up for grabs on offense really is the possibly available sixth wide receiver spot, the third tight end spot, and the offensive line depth spots. Let’s talk about how each position group plays out below.

Quarterbacks (3)

Starter: Patrick Mahomes
Depth: Chad Henne, Matt Moore
Practice Squad (1): Jordan Ta’amu

Behind Mahomes, Henne has handled all the second team reps throughout camp, so the top two are pretty much etched in stone. I would personally like to see Henne cut with Moore and Ta’amu as quarterbacks two and three respectively, but Henne’s contract makes that extremely doubtful even if he weren’t taking all the second-team snaps.

That leaves Moore and Ta’amu battling for the third spot and with how well Moore played last season when needed, it is hard to see him not coming away with the last quarterback roster spot. Ta’amu is probably a practice squad lock and could even be in the running for one of the four protected practice squad spots.

Running Backs/Fullback (5)

Starters: Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Anthony Sherman
Depth: Darrel Williams, DeAndre Washington, Darwin Thompson
Practice Squad (1): Elijah McGuire

It would be a big surprise to see the running back group look any different than this to start the season. McGuire is still there competing, so he could potentially poach Washington or Thompson’s spot, but more than likely he is stashed on the practice squad for emergency situations.

Edwards-Helaire should man the bulk of the work and it appears that Williams will be his primary backup. This group could have been a much more interesting training camp battle had it not been for Damien Williamsopt-out, but this should now be a pretty simple decision for the Chiefs when building the active roster.
