The new BIG 10 schedule is out and Nebraska football has a tough slate.

It wasn’t looking promising for the Nebraska Cornhuskers to get many wins in 2020 prior to the new schedule being released, but now that the three non-conference games have been removed, that also took at least two likely wins off the board.

Nebraska still has to play the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and now Michigan State has been thrown in there as well.

Five wins would be huge for Nebraska football in 2020.

It’s unknown if there will be a bowl season this year or not, but if there is, it’ll be tough for Nebraska to quality, even if the total of wins comes down to five for this year.

Rutgers should give them a nice win to open the season despite it being on the road. They’ll then return from for two games, one against Illinois and the other against Wisconsin. The Huskers beat Illinois on the road last year, but they faced the Fighting Illini before they turned things around and actually made it to a bowl game, so that game will be tougher than people expect.

From there, they rotate being on the road and home for the next three games, facing Iowa on the road, Minnesota at home, and Ohio State on the road, which are three brutal games. Minnesota and Ohio State curb stomped the Cornhuskers last year and Iowa has had their number for awhile now.

By this point of the season, Nebraska could be 2-4 at their first bye week. They’ll head to Northwestern next, who they might be able to beat. They likely won’t handle Penn State in Lincoln though, so at best, let’s say they’re 3-5 by this point, which is also when their next bye week takes place.

Nebraska closes out the season traveling to Purdue and hosting Michigan State. Those could both result in wins, but the Boilermakers have had the Huskers’ number and the Spartans will likely be looking to avenge their 9-6 loss in Lincoln two years ago.

So, at best, Nebraska football can maybe go 5-5 and if there are bowl games this season, they sneak in with a .500 record. Honestly, if the Cornhuskers can win five games, that would be incredible for this team against this schedule.

The only surefire win at this point appears to be Rutgers and they added back Greg Schiano this offseason to take back over the reins, so even that game is up in the air, especially with it being a road game.

It won’t be easy for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2020, but having college football back would be great. Hopefully it’s safe enough for the players, coaches, and staff to take the gridiron each week.
