Fantasy Football Defenses/Special Teams to Target – Number 9: Chiefs

. D/ST. Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City Chiefs. 9. player. 124

Who would have thought this time last year that the Kansas City Chiefs defense would land in the top ten on any kind of positive defensive rankings? That’s how big of an improvement this unit made in less than a year and we saw that with their Super Bowl win in February.

The Chiefs defense wasn’t smothering by any means, but with additions like Frank Clark and Tyrann Mathieu, it was enough to put them over the top and get them the trophy. They haven’t added any huge names this offseason, but they drafted Willie Gay to help them in the linebacker corp.

Kansas City also didn’t lose much depth this offseason. Bashaud Breeland will likely be suspended to start the season while Kendall Fuller and Reggie Ragland signed elsewhere, but otherwise, it’s the exact same unit from a year ago. Chris Jones is coming back too!

This was a Chiefs defense that was great at forcing takeaways while also getting after the quarterback. Their special teams are always top notch with Mecole Hardman and Tyreek Hill returning kicks and punts, and Hardman showed he was a huge threat in that department last year.

The Chiefs defense and special teams might not be a top five unit, but if you play in a league with other Chiefs fans, you’ll have to take them sooner than you’d probably like. I’d say aim for them in the seventh or eighth round.
