The Kansas City Chiefs have an explosive offense, but their secret weapon actually comes on the defensive side of the ball.

Charvarius Ward has a pretty cool story. He went undrafted in 2018, found his way onto the Cowboys roster and then ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs by season’s end.

Ward made his fair share of rookie mistakes in 2018, but he had what would have been the game-sealing interception in the AFC Championship Game if a certain somebody hadn’t jumped offsides. Ward continued to develop as a player and turned into a pretty solid cornerback for the Chiefs in 2019, his second year in the league.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report actually says that Ward is the Chiefs’ secret weapon in 2020 and had this to say,

"Ward was not a full-time starter prior to last season—he made two starts as a rookie in 2018—but he emerged as one of the most important members of the secondary.~~~While Ward is not yet a lockdown cover man, he is a player on the rise and could creep toward Pro Bowl status."

Ward will get more of a chance to prove himself in 2020, as Bashaud Breeland is going to miss a few games to start the season and that will propel Ward into a bigger role for the defending Super Bowl champions.

It’s not going to be easy for Ward, as all three of the Chiefs’ divisional foes made it a point to add firepower on offense this year. The Broncos in particular were focused on adding offensive talent because they know that just stopping the Kansas City Chiefs is no easy task, but instead they have to go toe-to-toe with them.

Knox notes in the article that unless people are Chiefs fans, they probably don’t know who Ward is, but he made waves last year and should become more of a household name, especially being on the Super Bowl champion roster.

Ward has a chance to really step up and become a lockdown corner in the NFL. If he’s able to do that, the Chiefs would really have made the most out of an undrafted free agent who they didn’t even initially sign.

Ward also has Antonio Hamilton, Rashad Fenton – a 2019 sixth round pick – and a few rookies that will be contributing in the secondary this year as well. He’ll be expected to carry the load and Chiefs fans should feel pretty good about that.
