Bobby Witt Jr. will be the next superstar of the Kansas City Royals
By Travis Neely
The Kansas City Royals’ future is looking very bright and 2019 second overall pick Bobby Witt Jr. looks to be a big reason as to why.
After stocking the stables with some of the best young arms available over the past two drafts, it’s hard to imagine the Kansas City Royals not competing for the American League Central sooner rather than later.
Even with their fixation on pitchers, it’s Bobby Witt Jr., a shortstop out of Colleyville Heritage High School who was the team’s second overall pick last year, that is going to be the next bonafide star to play baseball in Kansas City.
Making bold predictions is hard thing to do, especially with young baseball players. There are plenty of factors that can impact the progress to get to the big leagues.
One of the bright things to come out the pandemic and the second coming of “summer camp” is the ability to evaluate and see Bobby Witt Jr. get some at bats against some major league pitchers. Albeit the plate appearances have been only against Royals pitchers in intrasquad games at Kauffman Stadium, but hey – We’ll take what we can get here.
Without the pandemic, Kansas City Royals fans can easily assume that Bobby Witt Jr. would have likely made it to the AA Northwest Arkansas squad by season’s end.
With the summer camp, Witt is getting to face some of the big league arms on the Royals, including Danny Duffy, so it hasn’t all come against pitchers who haven’t made their debuts yet. The Royals top prospect sits as the number 10 prospect in all of MLB for a reason.
It was Duffy who also said “He’s the best hitter of all time” when talking about Bobby Witt Jr. so far at summer camp. There might be a bit of joking from Duffy with that comment, but don’t be surprised if this is the case in about four to five years.
There are plenty of similarities between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Bobby Witt Jr. They might not play the same sport, but they both have been groomed to be in their respective sport’s spotlight.
Both of their fathers were pitchers and are familiar with an MLB clubhouse, so it’s going to be a surprise if Witt Jr. doesn’t get close to the same fandom that Mahomes is currently getting.
During the intrasquad games, Witt Jr. has been seeing time at third base with Adalberto Mondesi playing shortstop. Mike Matheny appears to possibly giving Witt Jr. and opportunity to try and win that position in the future. That also leads speculators to believe that a call up of Witt Jr. might be in the not-so-distant future.
Could this happen during the 60 game 2020 season?
Highly doubtful.
There really isn’t a need to use a year of service right now on a young player that has really only seen time with the rookie league. Witt Jr. needs a few more at bats at in the system before he is ready to make that jump to the Royals main roster. After all, he just turned 20 years old last month, so there is plenty or room to develop him into the All-Star that his probably going to turn into.
Next season, we can expect Witt Jr. to be invited to Spring Training. It will be our real first opportunity to see him take some at bats against other pitchers in the league. Anticipate him having a solid spring where he shows that he is indeed the five-tool player everyone has expected.
Bobby Witt Jr. is going to show that he is fully capable of coming to the big leagues very soon. There is plenty of reason to believe he will become not only a household name in Kansas City, but also in every MLB town in America.
It’s been awhile since the Kansas City Royals have had a bonafide superstar, but Bobby Witt Jr. is already looking ready to fill that role.
