KC Chiefs: Chris Jones contract situation has taken backseat
The Chris Jones contract talks haven’t been front and center like many KC Chiefs fans expected them to.
When the confetti finishing falling from the Kansas City Chiefs‘ Super Bowl LIV victory, fans let that moment soak in for the next month (and some are still soaking it in), but we all knew this offseason would have a few major storylines.
One of the biggest would be what would happen to defensive tackle Chris Jones. Would he get the contract he wanted from the team who drafted him in the second round? Would he be traded? What was going to happen to Jones?
Chris Jones’ contract situation hasn’t been discussed much at all.
Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com noted that the contract talks between Jones and the Chiefs has been one of the more unresolved storylines from this offseason.
"Part of that is the result of what’s been happening in the world today, with COVID-19 and racial unrest being the two major issues. Another factor is the contract extension the Chiefs are trying to negotiate with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which should end up being the most massive deal in NFL history. But if you think the contract talks between Jones — who was given the franchise-tag designation — and this team won’t have a major impact on the near future, then you really haven’t been paying attention."
COVID-19 has definitely made for a unique offseason in the NFL because teams haven’t been able to communicate as much or as easily. Also, the Chiefs will definitely make it a point to pay Patrick Mahomes before they get a chance to pay Jones and that’s one of the other big issues here.
Mahomes deserves whatever the heck he wants from the Kansas City Chiefs, that’s for sure, but what will they decide to do with Jones? He’s been a force to be reckoned with for their defense since being their second round pick in 2016. He did struggle to stay healthy last season and the Chiefs just gave Frank Clark a lot of money last offseason, so they could opt to entirely move on from Jones and trade him.

The Chiefs need to make sure their defense remains strong because – while yes, their offense was a driving force in their Super Bowl winning season – it wasn’t until the defense rounded the corner, that the team really came into their own.
Jones played a big part in that, tallying nine sacks throughout the course of the 2019 season. His three deflected passes in the Super Bowl also were pivotal in the team winning the title.
It’s been a strange offseason, which is one of the biggest reasons Jones’ contract hasn’t been in the spotlight. Hopefully some kind of deal can be made where he can remain in Kansas City, but with Mahomes set to get paid, the Chiefs won’t be able to keep everyone moving forward.
