Chiefs news involves how Colin Kaepernick could be a fit for the Los Angeles Chargers. If he ended up signing with them, he’d be in the Chiefs’ division.

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have a need for any type of quarterback in 2020, as they have Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne, Jordan Ta’amu, and Shea Patterson on their current roster. Mahomes is as reliable a starter as they come while Henne is the veteran backup that teams covet. Throw in Ta’amu and Patterson as potential wild cards and the Chiefs are covered at quarterback.

That’s why when Roger Goodell encouraged teams to sign Colin Kaepernick, the Chiefs probably won’t be grouped in much as a possibility to sign him. At least not for 2020.

Kaepernick could, however, join the AFC West and the best fit for him in the division would be the Los Angeles Chargers, who are without Philip Rivers for the first time since they “drafted” him in 2004.

The Chargers parted ways with Rivers this offseason and then drafted Justin Herbert sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, They’ll roll with both him and Tyrod Taylor in 2020, but Kaepernick could be a nice acquisition with them. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler listed the Chargers as a possibility, having this to say,

"“And then the Los Angeles Chargers because they have Justin Herbert, the rookie, if they want to give him a true redshirt year they could roll with Tyrod Taylor, an athletic quarterback, with Kaepernick right behind him,”"

Herbert is the Chargers’ future, but Kaepernick could be a very good backup option for him. He hasn’t played an NFL game since 2016 and is 32 years old, but there’s certainly still potential left in the former second round pick.

"“I haven’t spoken with Colin, not sure where he’s at as far as in his career, what he wants to do,” Lynn said. “But Colin definitely fits the style of quarterback for the system that we’re going to be running. I’m very confident and happy with the three quarterbacks that I have, but you can never have too many people waiting on the runway.”"

Even if the Chargers were to bring Kaepernick in, he’d be a backup more than likely, as Herbert is their future. Kap fits what the Chargers are trying to become and would be a very good backup option for them.

It’ll be interesting to see how things go as far as Kaepernick’s NFL future (if there is one). If he joins the AFC West, a lot more eye balls will be on the division than normal, even if he doesn’t go into the season as a starter.
