KC Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes 2020 projections right on target
Patrick Mahomes is going to put up another tremendous season for the KC Chiefs.
At this point, nothing Patrick Mahomes does surprises anybody, so it’s hard to truly project what the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback might do for an encore after winning both a Super Bowl title and a Super Bowl MVP award.
ESPN released their 2020 projections with their fantasy football rankings and Mahomes’ projections are right on the money. He’s considered to be the third best player in fantasy and is projected to throw for 4,436 yards, 33 touchdowns, and ten interceptions while rushing for 280 yards and three more touchdowns on the ground.
"Patrick Mahomes is 24 years old and has 36 NFL starts under his belt yet has already been named both league and Super Bowl MVP. So where does he go from here? Well, considering he still has Andy Reid‘s pass-heavy scheme, a strong offensive line and a terrific group of targets led by Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce at his disposal, we should probably expect more of the same."
Hard to argue with that, right? Mahomes isn’t losing any weapons this year, so if he put up great numbers last season, we should expect the same from him in 2020 barring injury or something unusual.
Last season saw the then-reigning MVP toss for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five picks through 14 starts. He did miss two starts and also missed most of the Thursday night game against the Broncos, which is when he was injured. That’s nearly three games of action that he missed, so factoring that missed time for his 2020 numbers was important.
While Mahomes did technically regress from his MVP winning 2018 season to his Super Bowl winning 2019 season, that was to be expected. The guy threw for over 5,000 yards with 50 touchdowns as the Chiefs starting quarterback in 2018, so yeah, it was going to be hard to top that in his follow-up season.
The rushing numbers might sound like a lot for Mahomes, but we saw how well he moved after his injury including that famous play against the Titans in the AFC Championship Game where he scrambled for what felt like ever before dashing into the end zone. Mahomes is athletic and wants to make plays whenever he can, so if there’s an opportunity for him to use his legs, he’s going to.
Obviously Patrick Mahomes is going to be the first off most boards in fantasy leagues where there are a lot of Chiefs fans, but he’ll also be one of the first selected in fantasy leagues around the world too. We’ve all seen what he can do and he’s not a one-trick pony like some of the other high ranked players.
We’re all looking forward to see what Patrick Mahomes can accomplish in 2020.
