Kansas City Royals Mock Draft – Round 2, Pick 41: Masyn Winn, Starting Pitcher (RHP)/Shortstop

Masyn Winn is a 5’11”, 180 lb., two-way (right-handed starting pitcher and shortstop) high school prospect from Kingwood, Texas. Winn is a legitimate 18-year-old, two-way player with a cannon arm in the field and upper 90s velocity off the mound.

According to the Draft Prospect Rankings at mlb.com, Winn has the following future tool grades:

Shortstop

  • Overall: 50
  • Hit: 45
  • Power: 50
  • Run: 55
  • Arm: 65
  • Field: 55

Starting Pitcher

  • Overall: 50
  • Fastball: 60 (92 – 96 mph)
  • Curveball: 60 (79 – 82 mph)
  • Changeup: 55 (low 80s mph)
  • Control: 50

According to the scouting report on Winn at mlb.com;

"“Winn has a higher ceiling on the mound, where he has a pair of high-spin-rate weapons in a heater that sits at 92-96 mph with riding action and a curveball that ranges from 79-82 mph. His low-80s changeup isn’t as consistent as his fastball and curve but can give him a third plus offering at its best.”"

According to the scouting report on Winn at fangraphs.com;

"“Has been into the mid-90’s and flashed an easy plus hammer but didn’t pitch this summer, so largely hasn’t been scouted on the mound. Is also a good athlete that’s a 2nd-3rd rounder as a shortstop and hitter that looks the part and flashes everyday ability. Made first pitching appearance at Jupiter in October and worked 95-98 with a plus, high-spin hook.”"

My draft analysis on Winn in Mock Draft 2.0;

"“On the mound, Winn has three above-average pitch offerings with his fastball and curveball each grading as plus pitches with their high-spin rates. His curveball with its two-plane movement (slurve), couples well with his high velocity fastball (92 – 96 mph). Winn needs to work on cleaning up his mechanics for more repeatable consistency.”"

Winn fits the bill as one of the higher ceiling players available early-on in the draft. He is a legitimate two-way player and could be middle infielder capable of hitting .250 with 15-18 home runs while pitching as number 4 type starter or high leverage reliever.

Other possibilities: Alika Williams, Blaze Jordan, and Cole Henry.
