Prospects at pick four for Kansas City Royals: Zac Veen, Outfielder

Zac Veen has climbed the draft boards with some significant hype and could be the first high school player taken the in 2020 draft. The scouting report at mlb.com has this to say about Zac Veen:

"A solid average runner underway, Veen plays center field now, but is probably better suited for a corner spot. The Florida recruit is athletic enough with enough arm to profile in right, where his power potential could be a fit as well. If he continues to swing the bat like he did over the summer, he could very well figure into first-round conversations. His step forward at the start of the 2020 season, picking up from where he left off over the summer, has him very much in conversations among teams picking in the top 10."

I’m not buying into the Veen hype as much as others.

Veen does project to have five above-average tools, but without a great deal of scouting on him in 2020, the risk is too high to take him fourth overall. There are a lot of quality outfield prospects in the 2020 draft.

Veen is a high ceiling type/high risk-type prospect. Everyone is afraid to miss out on the next Mike Trout and maybe that is too lofty of an expectation to label Zac Veen with.

If you are completely sold on his tools and his likelihood of reaching his potential, he could be a fantastic pick. I just don’t think it is wise to take such a risk with the truncated five round draft in 2020.
