The Kansas City Chiefs brought Lavert Hill in as an undrafted free agent. What can be expected of Hill throughout the course of his rookie season?

Cornerback is always a position of need for most NFL teams, but for the Kansas City Chiefs, it seems like they’re always in search of their next starting cornerback. This year is no exception.

Fans were elated when Bashaud Breeland opted to re-sign on a one-year deal, but due to some offseason trouble, he might be suspended to begin the 2020 season. That leaves Charvarius Ward, Antonio Hamilton, and Rashad Fenton to carry the load.

This also opens things up for some of the lesser known corners on the roster though. Lavert Hill is one such corner.

Lavert Hill has an uphill battle in trying to make the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster

A UDFA finding his way onto the field during an NFL game as anything other than a special teams helper isn’t the most likely of scenarios, but it’s certainly happened. Ward himself was a UDFA two years ago and look at him now!

Hill could find himself in a similar role to that of Ward. He very well could make the 55-man roster due to the need for the position, but it’s going to take some time for him to find his way onto the gridiron, especially when you consider the Chiefs will likely give drafted guys L’Jarius Sneed (fourth round pick) and Thakarius Keyes (seventh round pick) more of a look.

Don’t get it twisted though – Hill could be an impact player for KC during his rookie season.

How could Lavert Hill make it into the secondary for the Kansas City Chiefs?

The easiest answer here is injuries. With the lack of depth already, especially with Breeland likely missing time, if any of the trio of Ward, Hamilton, or Fenton get banged up, someone else is going to get called into the game to replace them.

Hill had a nice career at Michigan and his three interceptions show that he is able to force takeaways and give the ball back to his offensive teammates. He’ll need to show that kind of ability during training camp and preseason action in order to fully show what he’s able to provide.

It won’t be easy for Lavert Hill to make it onto the field, but given how important the cornerback position is for the Kansas City Chiefs, that is his ticket onto the 55-man roster. He can be a depth piece until either someone is injured or ineffective enough to merit a benching.
