Kansas City Chiefs entering make or break season in 2020
Anthony Hitchens was never really going to get fair expectations here in Kansas City. Signed to a big contract back in 2018, Hitchens was brought in on big money to replace a guy in Derrick Johnson, who will one day get Hall of Fame votes.
From the start, many believed Hitchens was overpaid, but it was figured as long as he improved the run defense, then all would be forgiven.
Yeah, that didn’t happen.
In 2018, the Chiefs’ defense was abysmal and Hitchens was widely viewed as a weak link on a porous unit. He was named to the Pro Bowl as an alternate that year, but that should be taken as more of an indictment on who’s selecting Pro Bowlers.
In 2019, Hitchens’ play did improve mildly but he’s still viewed as, at best, an overpaid role player. Even with his poor play, Hitchens has proven himself to be a good guy in the locker room and good in the community, so I could see the Chiefs working to restructure his deal next offseason to keep him around.
That being said, to even consider that, Anthony Hitchens will have to step his game up and be more of a factor on the field in 2020.
