Chiefs news involves the KC Chiefs looking to begin their contract negotiations with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. What kind of deal could he command?

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to pay Patrick Mahomes whatever kind of money he wants. It’s only fair after Mahomes took over as the starter in 2018, led the Chiefs to the number one seed in the conference and to the AFC Championship Game appearance while winning the league MVP.

His encore performance was yet another trip to the AFC title game and then to the Super Bowl where he won the MVP for that game after leading his squad back in comeback fashion. Mahomes has been sensational since he took over the KC Chiefs offense in 2018, but what kind of money could the former first round pick get from his team?

Spotrac made predictions on what quarterbacks due for a payday could receive and had Mahomes set to earn a four-year contract worth $160 million with $130 million of that guaranteed. We all knew it’d take big bucks to extend Mahomes and while it’s a lot of money, he’s worth every penny of it for all that he’s done (especially considering he’s just 24 years of age).

"The Chiefs haven’t shied away from this, openly admitting that signing Mahomes is both going to be expensive but necessary. You don’t have a generational quarterback and play hardball with him, and this won’t develop into a Dak Prescott-style situation."

Patrick Mahomes getting paid big time money isn’t surprising, but it’ll be interesting to see how this contract effects future quarterbacks who get paid. No one believes that Dak Prescott or even Deshaun Watson (who is a great player) deserve to get paid the kind of money Mahomes is going to earn, but that’s the way the NFL works.

Something else to keep an eye on is how this works as far as the Chiefs cap situation goes. They’ve given out big contracts before, but nothing quite like this. It’ll be difficult to sign popular free agents after Mahomes gets this contract, which makes the drafts even more important for Kansas City, as it’ll be their prime way to get good talent to help them continue contending.

Paying Patrick Mahomes is a no brainer, but how much money will the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback end up getting?
