Kansas City Royals Mock Draft 2.0

Supplemental Round 1, pick 32: Masyn Winn, Starting Pitcher (RHP)/Shortstop

Masyn Winn is a 5’11”, 180 pound, two-way (right-handed starting pitcher and shortstop) high school prospect from Kingwood, Texas. Winn is a legitimate 18-year-old, two-way player with a cannon arm in the field and upper 90s velocity off the mound.

According to the Draft Prospect Rankings at mlb.com, Winn has the following future tool grades:

Shortstop

  • Overall: 50
  • Hit: 45
  • Power: 50
  • Run: 55
  • Arm: 65
  • Field: 55

Starting Pitcher

  • Overall: 50
  • Fastball: 60 (92 – 96 mph)
  • Curveball: 60 (79 – 82 mph)
  • Changeup: 55 (low 80s mph)
  • Control: 50

According to the scouting report on Winn at mlb.com;

"“Winn has a higher ceiling on the mound, where he has a pair of high-spin-rate weapons in a heater that sits at 92-96 mph with riding action and a curveball that ranges from 79-82 mph. His low-80s changeup isn’t as consistent as his fastball and curve but can give him a third plus offering at its best. His size and the effort in his delivery lead to questions as to whether he can hold up as a starter, but his athleticism and lightning-fast arm help his cause."

On the mound, Winn has three above-average pitch offerings with his fastball and curveball each grading as plus pitches with their high-spin rates. His curveball with its two-plane movement (slurve), couples well with his high velocity fastball (92 – 96 mph).

Winn needs to work on cleaning up his mechanics for more repeatable consistency. The velocity is impressive and deceiving from release and there’s a possibility for more velocity when Winn figures out how to use his legs more effectively to push off of the mound.

Winn has a head whack on his mechanic finish that needs toning down to improve his command consistency. Winn is more promising on the mound where he has a higher ceiling to be a number 4 type starter (4.00 FIP) or better.

In the field, Winn is a borderline plus defender at shortstop. He has above-average fielding with good range, body control, and a cannon for an arm. At the plate, Winn has the potential to be a .250 hitter with 15-18 home runs per year. Winn has above-average baserunning ability and could steal 15-20 bags per year.

It would be a lot of fun to see the Royals employ a two-way player and Winn fits the bill as one of the higher ceiling players available early-on in the draft.
