KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: LUCAS NIANG (ROUND 3, PICK 96)

The Chiefs had a decent draft, but their best pick was Lucas Niang, who they selected in the third round. An offensive lineman might not be the flashiest pick, but it’s an area the Chiefs absolutely needed to address in the draft.

When teams are fortunate enough to have a player like Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, they need to have an offensive line who capable of protecting him. Niang spent his college career at right tackle, which is obviously shored up by Mitchell Schwartz for the foreseeable future, but the hope is that Niang can slide in at the left guard position.

He’ll have to battle with Andrew Wylie and some of the other players on the roster for the left guard job, but given Niang’s resumé at TCU, he has a good shot at being a starting guard along the offensive line. Eventually maybe he’ll slide over to one of the two tackle spots, but that’s a story for a different day.

Some might not have thought this was Kansas City’s best pick, but an offensive lineman for a team wanting to protect its franchise quarterback is absolutely the best pick for the organization.
