KC Chiefs news includes the team signing former 2017 first round pick Taco Charlton, who flamed out in both Dallas and Miami. Can he turn his career around in Kansas City?

Despite keeping 20 of 22 starters from the 2019 Super Bowl winning roster, the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t done making moves. They signed defensive end Taco Charlton to a one-year deal on Saturday and it’s a low risk, high reward kind of move for the reigning champs.

Charlton was a standout talent during his time at Michigan and as a result, was the 28th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He didn’t start a single game his rookie year, but appeared in all 16 games. The following season he appeared in 11 games and started seven. He had just four sacks through two seasons in Big D and was traded to the “tanking” Miami Dolphins for 2019.

Charlton was fine in Miami with five sacks, but only started five games and that’s not first round talent at its finest. The hope for Charlton is that he can turn his career around in Kansas City, but the fact that he has been on three teams and is entering his fourth season is concerning for sure.

Sometimes, however, it’s all about finding the right fit and if Taco Charlton breaks out in Kansas City, then this will have been an excellent move. If he doesn’t pan out, oh well, it was worth a shot.

"The Chiefs did well to bring in a low-risk signing like Emmanuel Ogbah last year and he thrived in that rotational pass rusher role. Charlton could compete for those lost reps alongside rookie Mike Danna and holdovers Breeland Speaks and Kpassagnon on a veteran minimum deal."

Brett Veach has been a fan of making moves similar to this where he finds a first round “bust” and brings them to Kansas City. Examples of this include Reggie Ragland, Cameron Erving, and Emmanuel Ogbah, who all were first round picks (two by the Cleveland Browns in fact), failed to perform to a high enough standard to the team who drafted them, and then found themselves in Kansas City.

All three of those guys I just listed won Super Bowl rings with the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s not to say Charlton will or that he’ll be the same kind of success story in KC (despite their shortcomings, Ragland and Erving weren’t terrible the entire time they played for the Chiefs), but it goes to show that Veach more often than not knows what he’s doing when bringing in these former first round “busts”.

What do you think of this move, Chiefs Kingdom? Are you cool with the KC Chiefs taking a chance on Taco Charlton?
