The latest in KC Royals news centers around how the team could be in a division with new other teams if the 2020 season is played. One of those teams could be in-state “rival” St. Louis.

It’s officially May and there still is no baseball being played. While no one is sure of when the Major League Baseball season will get underway (or if it will), there appears to be traction to the Kansas City Royals and the other 29 teams having a season in 2020.

Furthermore, it appears that if there is a season, holding games in just Arizona and Florida don’t seem to be what will happen. Instead, teams will actually get to play games in their home stadiums, but fans won’t be permitted to attend until further notice.

If this new plan does happen, the Royals would be in a division with teams near Kansas City. This “central division” would take nine of the ten teams that make up the American League Central and National League Central (only one not included is the Pirates, who are replaced by the Braves).

Royals and Cardinals fans don’t exactly get along, as there’s always been a bit of a rivalry between Kansas City and St. Louis, so this would make for an interesting change of events. While the Cardinals have been an all-around better organization, the Royals have a World Series title and appearance more recently than that of the Cardinals.

"Every organization needs to develop its young players, but the franchises with more youth than others will suffer the most from this. As the Royals usher in a new era under owner John Sherman and manager Mike Matheny, the youth movement may be delayed by a bit."

The article from Nightengale is the best source on this info. He discusses how MLB is looking at the end of June to get the season underway and there might even be hope for fans to eventually attend games. Having the revenue that fans provide is ideal, but it’s not the end all be all for if sports can return safely.

We all want sports back, but there’s no need for leagues to rush this. If there is Kansas City Royals baseball this year, no one should take it for granted.
