Kansas City Chiefs: Final grades for 2020 NFL Draft
By Shade Piper
The 2020 NFL Draft is now complete and the Kansas City Chiefs now have a whole group of new faces who will suit up for the Super Bowl Champs this season. Here’s my grade for each pick.
Brett Veach didn’t pick every pick exactly how I would’ve wanted or how most Twitter GMs for that matter would have wanted, but I am still overall happy with the players taken. In this article, I will grade each selection made by the Kansas City Chiefs and urge you to do the same in the comment section.
ROUND ONE, PICK 32 (32ND OVERALL)
Clyde Edwards-Helaire is an A player and an A+ fit with the Chiefs, but the value at pick 32 is a C. Altogether, that evens up to make the selection around the B+ range.
Again, you could not ask for a running back that fits the Chiefs any better than Edwards-Helaire. He is the best past catching back in the draft and has great vision and is above average at making defenders miss despite very average speed overall.
I love the player, but don’t necessarily love the pick. If the Chiefs were set on taking Edwards-Helaire,r they probably could have traded back and got him still and been able to add another pick. However, it is possible that there weren’t any offers as Veach mentioned with the phones “going silent” or they may have just valued that fifth-year option on a position that Veach is not likely to want to pay.
Overall I think a B+ is a fair grade for the pick, but that doesn’t mean I am not extremely excited for the player (I already ordered my custom jersey).
ROUND TWO, PICK 31 (63RD OVERALL)
Willie Gay is another very good player for the Chiefs. He is an athletic freak. Standing at 6’1″ and 243 pounds, he ran a 4.46 40 at the combine, which is faster than what most skills position players even run.
I give the player an A- and the pick a B+. I thought it was possible that he could’ve been there in round three, so I couldn’t quite give the pick an A grade by itself, but Reid and Veach were probably nervous he wouldn’t even make it back to them at 63.
I gave the pick a B+, but with the player being graded at an A-, I went ahead and rounded up to an A- overall just because I really love this prospect and what he could bring to Kansas City’s defense.
